Gauranga is a term popularized by the Hare Krishna movement in the 1970s. It is derived from Sanskrit gauranga having a golden body, a Bahuvrihi compound from Gaura white, yellowish, reddish and Anga limb, member, the body. Gauranga is a name of Krishna in Puranic literature, and in Gaudiya Vaishnavism in particular a name of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu (considered a reincarnation of Krishna).Within Gaudiya Vaishnava tradition it is taken to refer to Chaitanya Mahaprabhus golden skin complexion. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was born in Mayapur, West Bengal, in 1486. Gaurang Shaligram Shila shows Gauranga in dancing mudra with hands raised in total devotion. This Shaligram Shila takes the devotee to the highest level of spirituality where the devotee thinks of only welfare of masses, philanthropy, doing good deeds, construct temples, arrange food and shelter for poor and other devotees. The worshipper generates lots of resources and wealth so that he can look after poor, give them enlightenment, spiritual augmentation and take them to the path of Bhakti and devotion. This Shila gives the devotee utmost respect, fame, success, extreme protection and he becomes savior of the poor and needy. This Shila will have golden impressions and is extremely rare and only few lucky devotees with enormous sat karma will be privileged to worship such rare Shila.
