He is shown as one of leg is tramping on Apasmara Purusha (a demon which, is the personification of ignorance) and his left foot lies folded on his lap. Also there showing the Snake which signifies the Tantric Knowledge .

Lord Shiva seated facing south or Dakshina when he taught the mind-born sons (Manasa Putra) of Brahma in a secluded spot on the Himalayas, therefore, he is called Dakshinamoorthy. Dakshinamoorthy or Dakshinamurti is the one who is facing south. He is an aspect of Lord Shiva as a Guru (teacher) of all types of knowledge.
